FORT HOOD, Texas – The base commander at Fort Hood says soldiers who witnessed a shooting rampage that left 13 people dead reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" before opening fire at the Texas post.

Lt. Gen. Robert Cone told NBC's "Today" show on Friday that suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, made the comment, which is Arabic for "God is great!" before the rampage Thursday that also left 30 people wounded.

Alleged Fort Hood Shooter Nidal Malik Hasan Was 'Calm,' Methodical During Massacre

ABC News

11/6/2009

Emily Friedman

Witnesses to Thursday's massacre at Fort Hood said alleged shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was calm as he opened fire at a crowd of young soldiers, pausing only to reload before he was taken down by a female officer that many hailed today as a hero.

"It was very deliberate in his approach, they said that he was calm," Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, the base commander at Fort Hood, told "Good Morning America" today. "Several soldiers shot multiple times and were recounting how they were shot."

The attacker killed 13 people, mostly military, and wounded 30. The Fort Hood Web site today addressed the tragedy with a line reading, "Friday is Day of Mourning! -- The duty day will begin no earlier than 0900."

Sgt. Salvatore "Rico" Sanchez told "Good Morning America" today that he treated a captain who was nearby when the shooting started. Covered with blood that wasn't his own, the captain escaped unscathed, with only a mild case of shock.

"According to the captain that I was treating, [Hasan] was sitting down and he just stood up out of nowhere and started shooting," Sanchez said.

As the sound of gunfire erupted, Sanchez said he heard people yelling to call 911 and "all kinds of cries for help."

Cone said wounded first responder Sgt. Kimberly Munley, who exchanged gunfire with Hasan and managed to shoot him four times despite being shot herself, put a stop to the carnage with her quick thinking and willingness to go head-to-head with the gun-wielding officer.

"She was quite effective, one of our most impressive young policemen," Cone said. "She walked up and basically engaged him. I think, certainly, this could've been far worse."

And the first report from the FBI about it was it was not terrorism related.

Kosovo separatists did a lot of damage starting in the 1980s from within the Yugoslavian army. Shootings and bombs in barracks were a major problem. The global governance crowd, including our own President Clinton, painted the Kosovar unpleasantness as an egregious abuse of the people by the government. One of the many reasons I voted for Alan Keyes in the 2000 primary was because he was the only candidate who excoriated the lies that were offered in support of our intervention in Kosovo.

The slaughter at Fort Hood yesterday is unacceptable. We owe our soldiers and civilians on such bases much better security.

Allahu Akbar?

Yea? Who among US are surprised? From all that can be gleaned now, this 'train wreck' was a long time in coming. How much guilt does the PC minded government pinheads share in nearly four dozen needless American casualties yesterday??

How many MORE Americans must sacrifice themselves on this PC alter?

How many MORE Americans must die before all of us DEMAND that ALL of our 'representatives' name this war and CLAIM IT?!?

It seems the media want to avoid offending Muslims ... but not Christians. And may even temper the news of the day to avoid reports that might stir fervor against Islam, in light of jihad possibly playing a contributing role in the deadly actions that took place at Ft. Hood, yesterday.

That seemed to be a concern on FOXNews yesterday, prior to releasing the name of the alleged shooter.

On FOXNews this morning, it was reported the alleged shooter of Muslim faith shouted, "God is Great!" while standing on a table, before the shooting spree began. The anchor quickly refocused negative attention away from Islam and towards Christianity by saying: If a Christian gunman stood on a table and shouted a Christian message prior to a shooting spree, ...

The segment ended leaving the image in the viewer's mind of someone of Christian faith committing jihad, rather than someone of Islamic faith.

I thought the reporting an insidious, back-handed attack on Christianity ... in the context of reporting of mass murder purportedly committed by a devout Muslim.

*Note: The assailant reportedly shouted: 'Allahu Akbar!' which is Arabic for 'Allah is Great!'  This poster acknowledges Allah is not the God of the Bible.

Cone said Munley spent Thursday night calling her fellow co-workers from her hospital bed to make sure everyone was OK.

Obama just spoke about the events at Ft. Hood, yesterday. Then quickly moved on to joblessness (10.2% -- the first time over 10% in some 30 years!)

Neither seemed topics he wanted to address. As he turned to exit the short press conference, Obama jogged up the steps to the White House doors ... apparently running from both topics, but not down-hearted about either.

Muhammad Atta said: "Shout, 'Allahu Akbar,' because this strikes fear in the hearts of the non-believers."

"Fort Hood soldier describes horrific scene to family in Utah," by John Daley for KSL.com, November 5 (thanks to AJ):

NORTHERN UTAH -- The news of the mass shooting at Fort Hood Thursday hit close to home for some Utahns. One man says his daughter heard the shooter exclaim "Allah Akbar" as he opened fire.

We want to stress that no government or military officials are reporting that and there is no way for us to independently confirm that it is true....

The soldier's father says his daughter was at Fort Hood Thursday when the shooting happened, and she called him, frantic and upset, soon after.

"She said, 'Dad, I'm OK. Don't worry, I'm OK.' And initially I said, 'What are you talking about?' She said, 'Haven't you heard?' And I said, 'No.' And she said, 'We've been attacked by terrorists,'" the father explained.

He told KSL News soldiers were sitting in a staging area for medical and dental checks when the group was startled by gunfire.

"A person behind counter stood up, and he said, 'Allah Akbar!' And just opened up on everybody," the father told us....
