The GOP elite's $1 million object lesson - and the message of NY-23
::
AIP-minded Activists & Independent Projects -> Patrick Flynn's "Republican" Watch

Conservatives owe NY-23 candidate Doug Hoffman immeasurable gratitude. He overcame impossible odds (single digits just a month ago) to come within two points of defeating Democrat Bill Owens. Hoffman had zero name recognition. National Republican Party officials dumped nearly $1 million into the race on behalf of radical leftist GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava, who then turned around, endorsed Owens and siphoned off 5 percent of the vote with her name still on the ballot after she dropped out.

Conservatives’ money went to pay for specious attack ads against Hoffman run by the NRCC like this.

Conservatives’ money went to support a GOP candidate who shares the same socialist alliances with fellow SEIU/ACORN/New Party/Working Families Party activist Patrick Gaspard, the Obama White House political director who intervened in the race to secure Scozzafava’s endorsement of Owens.

Hoffman’s candidacy illuminated the stark difference between GOP political opportunists willing to pimp out their endorsements to any old ACORN-embracing, Working Families Party-consorting, Big Labor crony who puts an “R” by her name — and movement conservatives who refuse to “mooooderate” for the politically expedient sake of mooooderation as dictated by out-of-touch Beltway party leaders. The NRCC/RNC’s $1 million debacle will cost much more than that.

As I’ve repeated many times over the last several weeks:

One thing is guaranteed at the conclusion of the NY-23 special congressional election: The Beltway Republicans who endorsed radical leftist Dede Scozzafava are going to have indelible egg stains on their faces. And GOP establishment fund-raising organizations will be the poorer for it.

To illustrate the point: This blog now has a regular feature spotlighting readers’ RNC rejected solicitation forms of the day.

Today’s rejected RNC donor form comes from reader Bud:

Which brings me to my syndicated column today.

Hoffman may have lost narrowly, but NY-23 is a much broader victory for conservatives who believe the Republican Party should stand for core limited government principles. Scozzafava, who was endorsed by far Left blogger Markos Moulitsas Zuniga and backed by Planned Parenthood, the National Education Association, and card-check-promoting trade unions, was denied the congressional seat because movement conservatives refused to support Arlen Specter in a skirt. This is a victory of principle.

Better a donkey in office that acts like a donkey than a donkey in elephant’s clothing making a complete ass of the GOP.

Moreover, NY-23 is a victory for conservatives who refuse to be marginalized in the public square by either the unhinged left or the establishment right. A humble accountant from upstate New York exposed the hypocrisy of GOP leaders trying to solicit funds from conservatives by lambasting Pelosi and the Dems’ support for high taxes, Big Labor, and bigger government — while using conservatives’ money to subsidize a high-taxing, Big Labor-pandering, bigger government radical. The repercussions will be felt well beyond NY-23’s borders. Conservatives’ disgust with the status quo has been heard and felt. They have been silent too long. They will be silent no more.

The GOP leadership knows it cannot afford to rest on its laurels, continue business as usual, and bask in yesterday’s electoral victories without confronting its abysmal abdication of principled conservative leadership in NY-23.

As Hoffman said in his concession speech, “This is only one fight in the battle.”

Onward. Upward. Rightward.

You've got to be joking is right; but sadly they(GOP) aren't.
Though its not enough that the left wants to run your life, as GOP asserts, they want to run the GOP too.

Now everyone knows Doug Hoffman. Who even knows Owens? Its interesting how they spin a close election in NYC against a Democrat, but in the 23rd give Doug no credit.. They claim how Bloomberg doesn't have the mandate he claimed but I see no clear madate for liberals in upstate NY. Sure they will tout it as a big victory, but we know. Just think, according to Liberals' rulebook he could be the next NY Senator and then even president.

RE-COUNT!

We should be as innocent as babes (on evil behavior like cheating) but shrewd as serpents (like demanding re-counts and post-mortem voter machine autopsies).

You know they are stuffing and slanting and tweaking and spinning.

Root it out! Where are our lawyers? Have we any on the ground up there?

Is AIP prepared for the next round of CHEAT-FESTS we call elections?

Let us not be loath to resort to the same degree of intense of "monitoring" of elections, if not the same crooked tactics as the true "nut jobs" out there, the ACORNISTAS.

Pre-preparing watchdogs and investigators ahead of time should not be beneath us, only beyond us, and that itself temporarily.

Anybody know if there will be legal challenges to this fraud in NY23?

Or are we accepting this close loss at face value?

If so, WHY?

When Nixon decided to avoid a re-count in 1960, he let down all those who actually gave him the victory. And the Mafia won. What kind of hero is that?

Fight for the right!

Scozzafava still got about 6%. Even any cursory evaluation should start with her and what she was doing in the race. At least she was routed out. Her political epitaph should read Dede, “the true spoiler”, Scozzafava.

This is how NBC's Domenico Montanaro put it (spun it)
“It was something of an upset [?...at 49%-45%] after it was widely considered a likely victory for Hoffman after the Republican pick, Dede Scozzafava, dropped out of the race over the weekend. Scozzafava did, however, endorse Owens -- though it was unclear what effect that would have.”

Unclear, what effect? Face it, she was running against Hoffman, not Owens.

Later in the night, the results were switiching from 49-45 to 49-46, then back.

Face it, she was running against Hoffman, not Owens.

Yep. With a million dollars of Republican money, the support of the GOP establishment in the district and nationally, and the help of her Democrat ACORN and union pals.

Commission this AIP cartoon:

An elephant and a donkey tag-teaming Hoffman, with the (female) elephant, "Dede" painted on her forehead, calling out:

"I'm not actually in this race!"

Even while bending Hoffman's arm behind his back as the Donkey kicks him in the . . . zipper.

Newt stands on the sidelines with popcorn, waving a "Dede" flag, yelling:

"Doug! Forfeit the match! You're hurting the country!"

Acornistas flank Newt on either side, their hands in his pockets.

Ha, Even all that "support" couldn't keep the traitor express afloat.

However, the Obama-express ground to a halt on the Garden State Parkway.

The Republican Party has achieved its goal of the big tent their leaders talk about. Their tent is big enough to support with money and endorsements and help elect liberal candidates from the Democratic Party.

I must agree that a recount seems to be in order. While I think too much is made of polling before elections, different polls from different organizations showed a steady increase for Doug Hoffman over the last few weeks (until Scozzafava's endorsement of the Democrat). The only significant drop occurred after Republican(?) Dede Scozzafava withdrew and endorsed the Democrat Owens. But by the time she withdrew her apparent support had grown so small could her endorsement of the Democrat made so much difference? Note the significant difference between Public Policy Polling October 31, which had Scozzafava at 13%, Owens at 34%, Hoffman at 51%!; then Siena Research Institute November 1 had Scozzafava at 6% (a drop which may make since if people had heard of her withdrawal), Owens 36%, and Hoffman at 41% (a ten percent drop in one day? Had some significant negative come out about him overnight?). Either these polls are more unreliable than we have been led to believe or there seems to be something at least questionable in the election results. Or perhaps Scozzafava's supporters followed her endorsement of the Democrat or realized there was little difference between her and Owens. Still while her vote percentage was similar to the last poll cited, how did Owens in two days move four percentage points ahead of Hoffman when November 1 Hoffman was 5 points ahead of Owens. Does Joe Biden cary that much weight in upper New York?
You can see a summary of the polls September 9 through November 1 at the Wikipedia article on this special election: .

At any rate, the local and national Republican committees (and certain Republican leaders) are certainly to blame for helping the Democrat Owens achieve victory.

Gregory, I sure do not discount the roll evil played in this "process".
The only conclusion I can really draw is that the Party establishments wanted to muddy the waters enough that it would be hard to read their real intentions into it. Having succeeded in that, they could interpret (spin) the results in their favor however it turned out. Seems to me, the only real constant in that election was Doug's campaign.

The irony is that the race Liberals(spinsters et al) did not want to emphasize before election was NY-23. Even White House operatives and Major Media tended to concentrate on the governor races in VA and NJ. And afterward we saw a complete reversal. The one that mattered not so much before hand is the only one that mattered after election.
