EMERGENCY ALERT FROM PERSONHOOD MISSISSIPPI!! State Attorney General Jim Hood's latest action protects abortion in Mississippi . . . His "legal opinion" endangers success of Pro Life petition effort. Don't let Jim Hood subvert the expressed will of 90,000 Mississippi voters! Mississippi law is crystal clear: Petitioners have one year to gather signatures of registered voters, then submit the petitions to the Circuit Court Clerks who then certify the validity of the signatures, and, then certified petitions are to be presented to the Secretary of State not later than 90 days before the next session of the state Legislature convenes. For Personhood Mississippi's Human Life Amendment petition the required number of signatures is almost 90,000. The legally correct deadlines are midnight February 13th to complete the signature-gathering process, and until October 6th to submit the certified petitions to the Secretary of State. However, the Attorney General's office issued an opinion that the signatures must be certified and submitted to the Secretary of State by the close of business on February 12th. THIS IS NOT WHAT THE LAW SAYS ! This means that even if we complete the signature-gathering activities a week in advance of the deadline, it is highly unlikely that the Circuit Court Clerks will be able to validate the signatures before Hood's artificially imposed deadline! Thus, one man can overturn the will of 90,000+ voters! Personhood Mississippi has filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court to require that the Attorney General and Secretary of State obey the wording of the state law, not rely on the Attorney General's opinion. The case will not be heard until sometime next week. Here are three things you can do to help today: - Call Attorney General Jim Hood at 601-359-3680. Politely tell him that you disagree with his opinion. Politely tell him that as a Mississippi voter you will hold him accountable for his decision to thwart the will of the people. Tell him that every signature should be counted and you consider this a violation of free speech & due process rights
- Contact your state Representative and your state Senator. Politely tell them that you disagree with the Attorney General's opinion and ask that they contact the AG's office to let him know that they are receiving calls and emails from constituents on this matter.
Ask them to issue a public statement that challenge's the AG's opinion. Let them know that you are a Pro Life voter who watches what legislators do, not just what they say. Forward this email to your pastor, your family, your friends, your co-workers, and your neighbors. |
