Maryland Independent Party's first Congressional candidate

Maryland Independent Party's Steve Schulin answers questions posed by Montgomery County League of Women Voters

Rockville, Maryland - August 29, 2008 - Steve Schulin of Rockville is Maryland Independent Party's first candidate. He's running for the Congressional seat currently held by Rep. Donna Edwards. Today, Mr. Schulin provided answers to questions posed by League of Women Voters for their voters guide. Here is the information he provided:

BACKGROUND: I've run nuclear.com since 1994. I'm disappointed at the miserable failure of our nation's dominant parties to offer a 100% pro-life candidate on the ballot, one who fears God, loves liberty, and will conserve our sovereignty. I'm a candidate because 'If you don't see a leader, be a leader.'

IMMIGRATION: I support immediate securing and continuous vigilant maintenance of our sovereign territory and borders. I oppose any private or governmental action that rewards illegal entry into the USA in any way, and demand speedy and full enforcement of our laws concerning all such activities. No amnesty.

CLIMATE CHANGE: After literally thousands of hours of reading science journals and discussing CO2-climate with a wide range of scientists, I strongly oppose the wrenching changes urged by the alarmists and global governance advocates. I support only commonsense actions like preventing homeowners associations from banning clotheslines. I'll debate anyone, anytime.

ECONOMY: I support abolishing the federal income tax. This will unleash an economic boom the likes of which we've never seen. A fair, simple, noninvasive, visible, efficient, consumption-based retail tax is my proposed replacement. The current tax system is destructive of our liberties in many ways.

EDUCATION: No child left behind is, sadly, an example of federal government abrogating the 10th amendment of our Constitution. If terrorists had caused the devastation of our education system, we'd declare war. I'll work to ensure parents have a real choice of schools, and I'll counter the secular humanists every day.

HEALTH CARE: We talk about health care, but our government has long been integral in misdirecting our resources into creating our current system of "sick care". This needs to change. I oppose the plans to nationalize this important part of our society.

NATIONAL SECURITY: "Peace through strength" is not a mere slogan. It is the means of our survival in a very dangerous and often hostile world. Our friendship should be a sought-after possession of all of good will everywhere in the world. Our enmity should be something that all rightfully fear.

About the candidate and the party

Steve Schulin, the founding editor at nuclear.com, represented Maryland at the inaugural national nominating convention of America's Independent Party, the nation’s third largest political party as measured by number of registered voters. Before helping to form the new party, he chaired the Maryland delegation at this year’s national nominating convention of the Constitution Party, which was previously the nation’s third largest political party. Maryland cast its votes at both conventions for favorite son Alan Keyes of Montgomery County. Dr. Keyes will be listed on the ballot in such states as California, Florida, and Colorado, but here in Maryland, voters will have to write him in.

Not only are you MIP's first Congressional candidate, my friend, you're also the first Congressional candidate for America's Independent Party! (only 434 left to go!)

Congratulations!

As the Nominations and Endorsements Committee is built out, you'll certainly be right there on the top of the list.

We have a certain amount of expertise among us in the area of running effective congressional campaigns. You know that those resources are completely at your disposal.

Montgomery County League of Women Voters published the Voters Guide this weekend. All my answers were included. The incumbent didn't get her answers in on time.

The local cable TV news station (News Channel 8) offered candidates 2-minute segments -- I scheduled my taping for the last possible day, which is today. With the fast-moving current events, I'm glad I held back. Here's the script I submitted yesterday for teleprompter:

Hi - The major parties appear intent on forcing you and me and our children to pay for a massive economic bailout plan. There is a much better option: abolish the federal income tax. This will result in an economic boom the likes of which we have never seen. Investor confidence will turn around so quickly that the current "crisis" will be but a tiny blip in our history. I'm Steve Schulin of Rockville. I'm running for Congress because I think this election is very important and the other candidates don't come close to representing my views.

God-fearing, liberty-loving, sovereignty-conserving folks across our state are forming a new party -- Maryland Independent Party. And we have joined with like-minded voters in other states to form what is already the third largest national party -- America's Independent Party. Our presidential candidate is Alan Keyes of Maryland. He'll be on millions of ballots in other states. Here, you'll have to write-in his name, and mine too.

Dr. Keyes and I are 100% pro-life. We agree with the founders of our nation that all human beings are created equal, endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights, including the right to life.

There are many other important issues facing us. Since 2006, the average electric bill has gone up 85% in Maryland, and if the Democrats and Republicans have their way, there's bigger price hikes yet to come, and for no good reason. I'm talking about global warming alarmism. As part of my business, nuclear.com, I have spent literally thousands of hours reading the climate science journals and discussing with scientists. I oppose the wrenching changes that are being urged by Donna Edwards, Barack Obama and John McCain, and am ready to debate anyone, any time, about the shoddy scientific basis for their claims.

It seems like every day we face the prospect of losing more of our individual rights and our national sovereignty. I want to preserve the blessings of liberty for you me and those yet to come. I invite you to check out the website www-dot-MarylandIndependentParty-dot-org, and I ask for your vote on November 4. Write in Steve Schulin - that's Steve Schulin S-C-H-U-L-I-N. Thanks.

I didn't expect the local cable news channel to have such a big newsroom. They are an offshoot of the local ABC broadcast station. It looked like the Washington Post newsroom in that Watergate movie. They also share the newsroom with politico.com. So a big thanks to Newschannel 8, and to y'all for the encouragement. The same station, BTW, sent a reporter out to interview the candidates in each of the local congressional districts for a series of voters guide stories. The segment for my district was posted last night. The reporter introduced me as a fellow who is running because none of the other candidates represent my views. I only got one line, but I'm glad they picked the line they did: "I'm thoroughly pro-life; I'm thoroughly pro-liberty; and I'm thoroughly pro-national sovereignty."

NewsChannel 8, the local cable news station, gave all the local Congressional candidates the opportunity to tape 2-minute statements in their Rosslyn newsroom. For the 4th district, four of us candidates participated. I taped mine on the last possible day -- Sept 30. The video was made available online Monday at http://cfc.news8.net/videoondemand.cfm?id=24370

Hi all - I barely met a 1 pm deadline today for submitting answers to local newspaper's online voters guide. Here's my answers, folowed by the script I then wrote for a 5 pm taping of 4-minute statement at local TV station.

MARYLAND INDEPENDENT PARTY

Steve Schulin,
Candidate for Congress - Maryland's 4th District
240-751-7286

Birthdate and place:  June 20, 1954, Abingdon, Pennsylvania

Residence:  15609 Gold Ring Way, Rockville, Maryland, since 1986

Family:  Married, with two children

Education:  B.A. (1979) - The Catholic University of America

Professional experience:  Founding editor of nuclear.com, after many years as a nuclear energy consultant. I've been granted unescorted access at dozens of commercial nuclear power plants to assist in their radiation protection programs and have been Q-cleared for similar work involving federal nuclear weapons production. Current member of American Nuclear Society, Professional Reactor Operator Society, American Geophysical Union, American Meteorological Society, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Community experience:   I've worked with young and old in various church, school, and civic groups over the years, with an occasional political letter to the editor or to an elected official urging some action. Over the past year, it has been a real pleasure and an honor to work with God-fearing, liberty-loving, sovereignty-conserving folks across the nation  -- supporters of Alan Keyes for President. In May, we decided to form America's Independent Party, and we are already the third largest national party in terms of number of registered voters. Our Maryland affiliate is the Maryland Independent Party. I've participated in a variety of state and local political causes this year. I stood with others in the group called Help Save Maryland in front of the day labor center in Derwood, urging government to stop aiding and abetting illegal immigration. I also answered the call for volunteers by Citizens for Responsible Government, gathering signatures to help unblock the referendum on the Montgomery County's ridiculously broad transgender rights law.

Key issues:  Every day, it seems like we wake up with a little less liberty than the day before, and with the prospect of big chunks of national sovereignty being given away. I want to stop these trends, and to regain much of what has already been lost. If We, the People, insist that America's principles -- as explicitly proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution -- be applied, we can have a bright future.

Questions:

How would you have voted on the $700 billion bailout/rescue package that Congress just approved?

I would have voted no, and I would have offered alternative solution -- abolish the federal income tax system, including repeal of the Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution. One of the reasons I have long supported this change is that it would result in an ecomomic boom the likes of which we have never seen. Investors would rush to put their money at work in the USA, and the current "crisis" would soon be but a minor blip in our history.

Is the bailout package a slippery slope? Can we expect other industries to need/request  similar massive help and, if that’s the case, how should the government respond?

The bailout is worse than slippery slope -- it is a headlong rush into unprecedented government ownership of industry. Everyone who cherishes our liberty ought to stand against the powerful combination of regulatory socialists personified by Obama and corporate socialists personified by McCain. This bailout is neither necessary nor desirable. The value of the dollar will fall as we print more. If you wanted to design a way to destroy the USA as a force for good in this world, you could not do better than giving more power to the same bunch of folks who got us into this mess. I suspect that, if you continue to vote for the Republicans and Democrats, yes, many more industries will fall into government control. The government should stop contributing to the problem. The best way to do that is to encourage community-based banks to flourish, and to stop allowing the destruction of healthy competition in every industry in the name of globalization and economies of scale.

Some, like Sen. Cardin, have called for a Manhattan Project-type effort to address the nation’s energy needs and to get the U.S. off foreign oil? What do you believe should be done?

I thoroughly agree with the goal of being as self-sufficient in vital needs as can be achieved. Energy supply is such a need. The federal government should not, however, be in the business of picking technological winners and losers. Some European nations have done this, and the results have been counterproductive in many ways. For example, every EU nation except UK adopted huge tax incentives for the purchase of diesel engine vehicles rather than than gasoline. This was done because mile-for-mile, diesel-powered vehicles emit less CO2, and CO2 was considered a climate change threat. Unfortunately, we have since discovered that the extra soot produced by these millions of extra diesels will actually cause more "radiative forcing" -- for more than a hundred years. If you want to go broke, be cold in the winter, and hot in the summer, getting the government involved in picking winners is a great choice. We have plenty of oil resources, plenty of coal, and and inventive people. The best course for government is to get out of the way.

What are your top three priorities for the next two years, if elected?

1. I will work to ensure that America's principles are front and center in every debate. We have allowed our federal government to stray from these principles for much too long. I will start with the principle in the Declaration of Independence that all of us are Created equal, endowed by Creator with certain unalienable rights, including the right to life. I will challenge the secular humanists who want the government to define the right to life as some outmoded religious superstition.

2. I will oppose the global warming alarmists. We've seen electric bills rise by an average of 85% here in Maryland since 2006, and if Donna Edwards, Barack Obama ad John McCain have their way, there will be much bigger price hikes soon, due to their support for mandatory controls on carbon dioxide emissions. As part of my business, nuclear.com, I've spent literally thousands of hours reading the science journals and discussing the issues with scientists. I've concluded that the state-of-the-art climate models are of dubious predictive value, and that the UNIPCC claims about attributing 20th century warming to CO2 are based much too much on an "attribution-by-exclusion" approach which doesn't exclude nearly enough. I will use my office to save the typical family thousands of dollars a year in extra energy costs by using my understanding of the scientific issues to counter the alarmists in a very public and effective way.

3. I will work to unjam the political system nationally by sponsoring legislation to tear down the procedural fortresses that reward and protect incumbents; to ensure that every vote gets counted; and to ensure that every individual is free to voice his or her opinion.

How would you rate the performance of the House of Representatives: excellent, good, fair or poor? Why?

Of those three choices, "poor" is the closest to accurate. The Democrats and Republicans have failed miserably in leadership. I hope we fire a lot of them this year. The current financial system mess is a travesty and better leadership should have prevented it from ever occurring.

Do you have a timeline on when the U.S. should pull out of Iraq?

I don't favor a timeline, although I'd support one if the Iraqi government demands it. There's been tremendous progress in Iraq, and their tyrant neighbors are not at all pleased with this new tree of liberty blossoming in their region.

How should the government pay for the War on Terror and is it working?

"Peace through strength" is not a mere slogan, it is the means of survival for our country in a very dangerous and often hostile world. Our friendship should be a sought-after possession of all men and women of good will everywhere in the world. Our enmity should be something that all rightfully fear. We need economic strength at home. A good start to restoring that economic strength will be abolishing the income tax, substituting a a fair, simple, noninvasive, visible, efficient, consumption-based retail tax similar to the proposal popularly known as the FairTax. We have had some successes in the war, some publicized, some hinted at. We have also had some losses, including self-imposed losses to our liberties. The fact that we do not have control of who enters our country seems an obvious invitation to failure. I believe in secure national borders and bountiful freedom within.

Would you make any changes to the way the Department of Homeland Security is run?

I've not studied that huge Department.

What should be done to reform Social Security, Medicare?

The promises already made by these programs should be golden. The cost will be huge, and that makes unleashing our economy even more urgent than would have been the case if the Ponzi-scheme of social security had never been adopted. As to medical care, our government programs have been largely responsible for turning what should be a "health care" system into a "sick care" system. This has to change.

Should SCHIP be expanded? If yes, how would you pay for an expansion? If no, how would you ensure that people who need health and dental care get it?

No. States should be in the lead. This and the other redistributionist federal programs are an abrogation of the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution.

What is your position on the death penalty?

The government does have the right to impose the death penalty. The prosecutorial abuses uncovered in many death penalty cases are sickening and the People should hold malfeasant officials to account.

What is your position on abortion?

Here's the platform plank I've proposed for the new Maryland Independent Party: "Because the stated ultimate purpose of our Constitution is "to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity," we recognize the personhood of all unborn children and their protection by the Fifth and the Fourteenth Amendments. The right to life of all innocent persons, from conception to natural death, is God-given and unalienable. For the principled man or woman, no compromise is possible concerning such a critical matter of life and death. We believe that violators of this supreme right, in their words and actions, are unfit for any office of public trust, since this constitutes the breaking of the oath of office and the destruction of the very basis of our liberty."

Do you support the federal No Child Left Behind law?

No. This is another example of the federal government getting involved in areas denied to it by the Tenth Amendment. I will work to ensure that every parent has a choice in where to educate their children and I will fight the secular humanists every day. If foreign terrorists had caused the wreck of our education system, we'd declare war.

What, if anything, should be done to assist homeowners at risk of losing their homes because of adjustable rate loans?

The federal government was wrong to encourage uneconomic loans, but the main thing we should do now is stop the inflationary component of adjustable mortgages.

Who should bear the costs of the changes wrought by BRAC?

State and local.

What state transportation projects are a priority and how should we pay for them?

Mass transit is our biggest need. The federal government can best help by, that's right, abolishing the income tax and watching the economy boom.

- - - END OF ANSWERS TO NEWSPAPER QUESTIONS - - -

Here's the script I used this afternoon for a 4-minute video segment for the local public access TV station, AccessMontgomery. They will compile the segments from each candidate in my district and present the "Meet the candidates" show several times before the election. The show will also be made available online.

STATEMENT OF STEVE SCHULIN, OCTOBER 8, 2008

The major parties have failed, miserably, in providing leadership. Every day, it seems we wake up with a bit less liberty and with the prospect of another big chunk of our sovereignty being given away. The recent hasty financial rescue is a tragic example of regulatory socialists like Barack Obama and our own Donna Edwards working in tandem with the corporate socialists like John McCain. I would have voted _no_ on that bill, and offered an alternative: abolish the federal income tax. The economic boom would be unlike anything seen before. Investors would rush to put their money to work. The current “crisis” would soon be but a minor blip in our history.

Here’s another example of leadership failure: electricity bills in Maryland have risen an average of 85% since 2006. And if the republicans and democrats have their way, there's more price hikes soon to come, for no good reason.

Can your family budget afford to pay an extra two thousand two hundred and fifty dollars a year for energy?

Well, that's how much the last CO2 cap-and-trade bill debated in congress would cost a typical family of four, according to economic analysis team at Charles River Associates.

That's an extra two-thousand-plus from household income of fifty-thousand dollars a year. Nobody can afford that, yet the democrat and republican candidates for President both support this type of bill. And our new representative, Donna Edwards, does too.

On her web site, along with the endorsements of so-called environmental groups like Sierra Club and Friends of the Earth, you can find Ms. Edwards claim, and I quote, "...We're in a crisis. It's time to set mandatory limits on [CO2] emissions with a goal of twenty percent reductions by 2020 and eighty percent reductions by the middle of the century.”

_“This”_, she says, “is the call for this generation of leaders ..."

Ladies and gentlemen, my business is nuclear power. I own nuclear-dot-com. Nuclear plants don't emit CO2. If CO2 controls are adopted, my personal financial outlook will be all the brighter. But after literally thousands of hours reading the science journals and discussing with scientists, i assure you that the alarmism embraced by Donna Edwards is based on shoddy analysis. Part of the problem is that the field of climate science is so broad that few scientists have much understanding of the many exaggerations that are bandied about every day on this subject.

If you want someone in congress who can stand up to the CO2 alarmism with knowledge and skill, i'm you're guy.

I'm Steve Schulin of Rockville. I'm here because I want my children _and yours_ to enjoy the many blessings of liberty. I’m a God-fearing, liberty-loving, sovereignty-conserving American. I support a new party, called Maryland Independent Party, and i’m asking for your vote.

If you value American principles more than party labels, i hope you'll check out the platform I've proposed at www-dot-marylandindependentparty-dot-org.

With like-minded folks across the country, a new national party has been formed too -- America’s Independent Party.

Alan Keyes of Maryland is our nominee for President.

Dr. Keyes is the candidate who has long best represented -- by far -- my views on a wide range of important issues. He’ll be a choice on the ballot for millions of voters. Here, you’ll have to write-in his name. I hope you’ll do so. Dr. Keyes can win this election. All he needs is about a third of the vote in about half of the states to win the electoral college.

One of the things he's said that i've taken to heart is "if you don't see a leader, be a leader." Well, i look at the other candidates and see no one else who stands with me for the Declaration principle that we are endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights, including the right to life. I am 100% pro-life. Compare that with Donna Edwards who lists the nation’s largest abortion provider as one of her “champions of change”.

None of the other candidates stand with me on the subject of secure borders, either. I believe in keeping the bad guys out and bountiful liberty inside.

I’ll work to ensure that parents have a choice of schools, and I’ll fight the secular humanists every day.

To vote for me on November 4, use the "write-in" feature. My name is Steve Schulin - s-c-h-u-l-i-n.

Thank you, and may god richly bless you.

You were the best one.  I would vote for you if I were in Maryland.

I forwarded a link, the transcript, and copy of your above voter-guide post to someone who previously lived in Maryland, and asked her to forward it to her contacts there.

The Gazette added my page today to their online voters guide -- it's available at http://www.gazette.net/votersguide08/election/schulin.shtml. There's no guarantee that they'll include me in the print vesrion that will be published as part of the pre-election issue. Folks here in my district could probably help the odds of being included by emailing the editors of each edition and let them know that a write-in candidate is actively campaigning and that you think the public interest would be well-served by including him in the print edition too.

A Maryland state political website, PolitickerMD.com, had an article today which highlighted state GOP chair's claim that the incumbent Rep. in my district was being a hypocrite in avoiding debate with the GOP candidate. The incumbent had defeated the prior incumbent in primary, and one of her criticisms of her opponent was his refusal to debate. I took the opportunity to talk about Alan Keyes for President, and me for Congress, as follows:

MD-4 candidate ready to debate at the drop of a hat

The GOP had a golden opportunity to win the 4th district Congressional seat in the special election in June. Seventeen thousand or so votes would have won. Where was the GOP support for their candidate? I registered as a Republican when I moved here as a young married man in the 1980s. But I cannot support John McCain for President, nor even stay silent about his reprehensible record on issues that are important to me. Obama is every bit as unacceptable to me too. Both seem to be clearly disastrous choices in terms of preserving our national sovereignty and individual liberty. I support Alan Keyes' decision to leave the GOP and continue to run as an independent. He will be on the ballot for millions of voters across the nation, but here in Maryland, you'll have to write-in his name.

One of the things Dr. Keyes has emphasized is that those who think that these are extraordinary times have an obligation to decide whether they are satisfied participating as normal this year. I urge all of good will to check out the new party being started here in Maryland -- Maryland Independent Party. We need 10,000 petition signers to get candidates on the ballot in 2010. Will you help by printing and mailing in the form available at http://www.MarylandIndependentParty.org ?

Like-minded folks in other states have joined with us in starting a new national party too -- America's Independent Party. We're already the third largest national political party in terms of number of registered voters. And we're not satisfied with being #3.

There's never been a presidential candidate who's garnered tens of millions of write-in votes. But this election continues to be extraordinary. Tens of millions of voters might be getting more steamed with every passing day about the recent massive financial "rescue" law. Obama and McCain both voted for it. I suspect Keyes would have vetoed the bill if he were President. I know that I would have voted against it if I were in Congress. And by the way, I too am a write-in candidate. I'm the one to whom the subject line refers -- ready to debate at the drop of a hat. Not only would I have opposed the government taking ownership stake in the financial industry, and the saddling of our children with yet more government debt to do it, but I would have offered an alternative: abolish the federal income tax. This would have a much better effect on investor confidence, and rightly so. We would see an economic boom the likes of which have never before been seen. Investors would be lining up to put their money to work in the USA. The current 'crisis' would soon be but a minor blip in our history.

But there's many other issues which could cause millions, and even tens of millions, to decide that neither Obama or McCain are worthy of their vote:

* Border control - Seven years after 9/11, and the Republicans and Democrats still haven't found the leadership to control who enters our nation. This is a travesty, as it would be even if the only consideration was national security against the jihadists. Who will those who believe -- like I do -- in controlling who enters our nation, and bountiful freedom within, vote for this year? McCain and Obama have shown what they want. And what they want is quite different from what I want. Alan Keyes represents my views on this much better than Soros-supported McCain and the Soros-supported Obama.

* CO2-climate - McCain and Obama, and Donna Edwards too, support mandatory reductions in CO2 emissions which will require wrenching changes in our society. My industry is nuclear power. I own the nuclear.com domain. I've spent literally thousands of hours reading the science journals and discussing with scientists. This is an incredibly broad field, and I have found that most scientists involved in climate science are so necessarily specialized in their knowledge that they do not have a good understanding of many of the exaggerations and lies that get bandied about on this subject every day. This issue is huge in terms of our liberties as US citizens and in terms of our wallets too. If you're not ready to hand the keys to our economy and our lifestyles to the globalists, the only way not to waste your vote this year is to vote for Alan Keyes (and me, too).

* Gun rights - Obama is rightfully known as a gun-grabber. You've surely heard his comments in San Francisco about those who cling to their religion and their guns. Well, did you know that McCain earned a grade of "F" in recent years from Gun Owners of America? Keyes gets an "A" from them, and I believe they are correct about all of the above. Who will those who understand the role of the Second Amendment vote for this year?

* Federal income tax system - I mentioned this earlier, highlighting the economic benefits of abolishing this tax system. But that's not the biggest advantage that will flow from repealing the Sixteenth Amendment. The income tax is inimical to our liberty in many ways. If you didn't get a chance to see Dr. Keyes discuss this in the Republican primary debates in 2000, I urge you to visit the Keyes video archives -- there's a link at http://www.MarylandIndependentParty.org -- the sight of this descendant of slaves describing the enslaving nature of the income tax is a powerful thing.

* Pro-life - Dr Keyes represents my view, and that of the founders of our nation, that all humans are endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights, including the right to life. Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin are all pro-choice. They turn their collective backs on the innocent human beings who are allowed to be killed in the womb, and in the case of Obama, even when the little human survives outside the womb after an attempted abortion. I know there are tens of millions of voters who understand the damage that legalized abortion does to our society. If these people alone decided that the lesser of two evils is not nearly good enough, then Alan Keyes might be the next President of the United States.

Very truly,

MARYLAND INDEPENDENT PARTY

A poster at PolitickerMD.com asked "...do you think you have shot in hell either? Not in this state you don't." Here's my reply:

Maryland Independent Party seeks to empower new generation

Hi Linda -

We've all seen change. I think there's plenty of opportunity for a God-fearing, liberty-loving, sovereignty-conserving party here in Maryland, including Montgomery and Prince George's. Rep. Edwards seems gung-ho "pro-choice", for example. I think her position denying that babies have the right to life is akin to the position of those who denied that blacks were endowed by our Creator with the same unalienable rights as the rest of us human beings. This issue alone could change the political face of our counties, states and nation, and quickly. Donna Edwards calls Planned Parenthood one of her "Champions of Change". Well, I think this approach has worked so far only because the pro-life movement has not been effective in communicating. Our new party is organizing with an eye on empowering folks in each precinct to apply America's principles -- like the God-given right-to-life -- with intelligence and enthusiasm. You ask about chances in hell. Well dear, I don't think we're in hell, although with the Democratic and Republican parties failing in leadership for so long, I can sure empathize with your confusion.

My motto today is "Don't vote for the white man. Don't vote for the black man. Vote for the right man." That Alan Keyes' ancestors came to Maryland as slaves hundreds of years ago, and this year he's on the ballot for President in states with many millions of voters, like California and Florida, is pretty neat. I remember in 2000, Dr. Keyes went down to the Alabama GOP 'beauty contest' and by the end of the day, through the strength of his ideas and power of his oratory (and the fact that frontrunners didn't bother to attend) had won the endorsement of this statewide gathering of Alabama Republicans. You bet I think we can win here in MD4 and MD8. Will we do so this year with Dr. Keyes as a write-in for President and me as a write-in for Congress? LOL -- I hope you'll forward a copy of this message to everybody on your block and ask all your friends to do the same, and thus pose the question to the voters yourself.

Best wishes to all of good will,

MARYLAND INDEPENDENT PARTY

See God-fearing, liberty-loving, sovereignty-conserving Steve Schulin, and other Congressional candidates, at 4pm and 11 pm today on Montgomery cable channel 21

Cable channel 21 in Montgomery County is showing the 4-minute candidate statements for Congressional races today at 4 pm and again at 11 pm. The District 4 candidates, including Maryland Independent Party's Steve Schulin, are shown first.

Mr. Schulin today asked the public access TV station why the candidates' statements for this election have not been made available for online viewing on the station's website, as was the case in prior elections. "I very much appreciate that candidates are given the opportunity to make these recordings. For the special election last June, I was glad to provide visitors to my campaign website with a clickable link to the online program so that folks could compare my statement with those of the other candidates. I'm sorry that the recordings are not available for such viewing this time."

The cable channel typically releases detailed programming schedule no more than a day or two ahead. For example, as of 12:30 pm today, tomorrow's schedule has not yet been released.

To ask the public access cable channel to please make the candidate statements available for on-demand viewing on the web before the election, please call Access Montgomery at 301-424-1730. Access Montgomery is funded via the franchise fee added on to customer's cable bills.

The updated schedules for channel 21 are made available at http://www.mct-tv.org/pguide/pg21today.htm

Thanks to all who called the station. They called me up and said that the video would be available on the web today. It's not there yet, but tomorrow's schedule is posted -- the Congressional candidates segments will be broadcast at 11:30 am on Fri, Oct 31.

The video of Montgomery County's congressional candidates' statements is available for online viewing -- it's the bottom one at http://www.accessmontgomery.tv/cn4_1_0.htm. Maryland Independent Party's Steve Schulin is the 4th candidate shown, starting at the 10:45 mark. The Access Montgomery server seems to perform smoothly, so I recommend using that one until election day. The video has also been archived at http://blip.tv/file/1414148/, where it will remain long after AccessMontgomery pulls it off their pages.

Maryland Independent Party conference call tonight 10:05 pm

Nov 5, 2008

The presidential candidates of the major parties seemed so flawed to me that I thought we could have an impact this year. I urge all Marylanders of good will to join in efforts to empower a new generation of leaders. Our statewide town-hall-style telephone conference calls are one of the ways we are communicating with each other. Tonight's call promises to be filled with practical ideas about how to build our new party between now and the 2010 election.

Our statewide conference calls are
Wednesday nights starting at 10:05 pm
and
Saturday mornings starting at 9:05 am

The Dial-in number is 712-421-7885.

You'll be prompted to enter a code -- the code is 2008#

Best wishes,

MARYLAND INDEPENDENT PARTY

Steve Schulin,
Rockville

P.S. I spent most of the day yesterday at my precinct here in Derwood. I was registered as a write-in candidate for Congress. The good news is that I won about 75% of the write-in votes cast in my precinct. The bad news is that there were only 18 such votes. If my percentage holds up elsewhere in the District, that would be hundreds of write-in votes, and that's a start. We've had folks from across the state affiliate with our new national party at http://www.aipnews.com -- and from the resolve I heard on the national call last night, we are in good company. Here's a photo of the table I set up in front of our polling place to inform folks that they had a better choice than offered by the Democratic and Republican nominees:

My precinct has about 1800 voters - the parking lot was filled before 7am opening -- those who came shortly after had an hour in line. The wait was down to about 30 minutes when this photo was taken. A Bd of Elections official made me move a few minutes later, saying I was too close to the entrance. Wish I had a hundred-foot measuring tape in my kit, because previous elections had the 'no electioneering' limits marked much differently. Small beginnings

The state elections website reported yesterday that 75 write-in votes were cast for me for Congress. These were not quite enough to overcome the incumbent's 258,000-plus votes.

Individual precinct totals have not been released, but I was at my local precinct as the voting machine print outs were obtained on election night, so I know that thirteen or fourteen folks in my own precinct are amongst the 75, and I'm very grateful for the support of these friends and neighbors. I might know a few of the folks elsewhere in the district who wrote-in my name, and I'm thankful for their support too. But to the other sixty or so folks who saw my TV statements or read my answers to voters guide questions, I am humbled by the notion that you thought highly enough about what I had to say to bring my name with you and spell it out on the voting machine. I urge you and other Marylanders of good will to join in the continuing efforts to provide voters with a better choice up and down the ballot across the state and the nation.

It has been a pleasure to meet many like-minded people who have joined in creating America's Independent Party. We are already the third-largest national party as measured by the number of registered voters. That's because the large pre-existing state party in California known as American Independent Party affiliated with us this summer. Here in Maryland, we will not be recognized as a party by the state until we submit petition signatures from 10,000 Marylanders. The sooner we get our signatures, the better. I'd like a thousand folks to each get ten signatures. Would you be one? Print out the form, ask your neighbors to sign, then mail the completed form to our state chair (her mailing address is shown right there on the form).

Our new party has been very active on many fronts. Our national chairman was a guest on three radio shows yesterday, including the WCBM 680-AM morning show in Baltimore, talking about the court cases we're involved in to ensure that the Constitutional requirement -- that only natural born citizen can become President -- is followed in this extraordinary year. We are also working with the "personhood" movement in getting the unalienable right to life explicitly recognized in state constitutions across the land. In some states, citizens can bring constitutional amendments to the voters by petition. Here in Maryland, we have to get any amendment passed by the state legislature, and this makes our efforts to elect pro-life legislators especially important here.

We're using an innovative approach to ensure that the principles we emphasize -- we call them America's Principles -- continue to drive our new party. We do not plan to use the state primary election system to nominate our candidates. Rather, we will use a caucus system. And the only way for folks to have a vote in their precinct caucus is to sign agreement with the principles spelled out in Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. If you don't think that all are created equal, endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights including the right to life, you do not get to vote on who our candidates will be. This is different than the primary system, where the only requirement for voting to choose party's nominee is that the voter registers his or her party affiliation without a whit of agreement with core principles required.
